Homemade Tortillas are way easier than you think and so worth the time. Tortillas are one of those things that seem difficult till you do them. like, “eats easier to jut but them at the store”. Ya, sure, but you could say that about anything. All things are easier to buy at the store. But I am a firm believer in quality over convenience. These homemade tortillas are only 3 ingredients, yes you heard me right 3. They were a huge hit at my house and will definitely be on repeat. Now, don’t forget to follow my Pinterest so you can save these recipes more easily. I also have a video tutorial that really shows you the sets if you are a visual learner. As for me, I know I am. That video is through this link, to my Instagram, where I also share more recipes and nutrition tips. A great recipe to make along side this one if my slow cooker pork tacos recipe. It is amazing.
What you need for this recipe:
-Cast Iron Pan, or a good pan that will heat up good.
-Rolling pin, this is pretty critical for the tortillas so they can be thin and smooth.
Ingredients:
-Flour
-Salted butter
-Hot water
(Yes that’s it.)
Method:
You are going to take 3.5 cups of all purpose flour, 1/3 cup of salted butter melty and 1 cup of hot water. As hot as the sink will go. Mix the ingredients well with a baking spoon till it is decently combines. Then knead by hand in the bowl till it is combined completely.
Now you will remove the dough from the bowl, knead it on the counter or butcher block that has been dusted with flour. You are gunna work the dough till it is a smooth ball. (You can see an example of this on the video here.)
Place it back in the bowl and cover with a damp kitchen towel for about 15 minutes, to let the dough rest.
After the dough has rested:
Now, remove the dough from the bowl and divide the dough in to pieces, around 15-20 tortillas depending on the size. There are two ways to go about what you can do next.
I wrap each one individually in plastic wrap so they don’t oxidize and that way if I don’t use them all I can save them in the fridge for up to 3-4 days or the freezer for about a month.
If you know you are going to use them all, you can put all the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment and cover them all with the damp kitchen towel.
Let the dough balls rest for about 10 minutes.
Next you will lightly flour your work table and rolling pin and start to roll our your dough. They should turn out flat like the picture below.
When those Tortillas are well and on their way you are going to pre-heat your cast iron pan or pan in general to medium high. Once it is ready place one of your homemade tortillas on the pan.
When you start to see bubbles you know its going well. Wait till the bubbles get kinda big before you flip. Just make sure you don’t burn the tortillas. This should take around 20-30 seconds each side.
Every pan is different so just eyeball it.
Place your cooked tortillas in a tortilla holder or a kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft.
Now you are ready to have tacos!!!!
